STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONOTORING AT AN ANTENNA REFLECTOR

Customer: ESA/ESTEC (2007-2009)
The goal of the whole study was the evaluation and demonstration of the use of fibre optical sensors (FOS: glass fibres with a large number of embedded sensor gratings) in telecommunication satellites for health monitoring during manufacturing, assembly, integration, testing, launch and in-orbit mission.
In contract to the prime contractor Kayser-Threde, HPS was responsible for the implementation of the technology into a CFRP antenna reflector including respective test predictions and correlations. IN subcontract to HPS, INVENT manufactured a 1,2m reflector equipped with four FOS-fibres containing each 5 strain and temperature sensors.
The concept have been verified by a static test as well as in a vibration test campaign.
