HIGHLY INNOVATIVE SATELLITE COMMUNICATION STRUCTURES WITH ENHANCED THERMAL AND ELECTROMAGNETIC PROPERTIES

Project duration: 2009-2011Highly innovative satellite communication structures with enhanced thermal and electromagnetic properties. German title: Höchst innovative Satkom Strukturen mit erhöhten thermischen und elektromagnetischen Eigenschaften.

High demands on payloads for telecom satellites also require new technological solutions such as novel materials and their manufacturing processes, FE modelling techniques as well as test methods. The objective is to achieve flawless electro-magnetic reflection, high stiffness and dimensional stability also during exposure to alternating temperatures and preferably uniform heat distribution while keeping the lowest possible mass. The material focus is on CFRP. Three applications are addressed within this study, i.e.:

  • Antenna reflectors
  • Dual gridded reflectors (DGR), also known as polarisation selective reflectors (PSR)
  • Radiators

The improvements shall be verfied on coupon level and finally on demonstrator level. The study has been initialised recently.

Funded by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) based on a resolution of the German Federal Parliament (German Bundestag) using resources of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, support code 50 YB 0930.
