CarboSpace

 Project duration: 2009-2011
From spring 2009 on HPS is involved in a German national very large R&D initiative on Carbon Nanotube (CNT) materials (“INNO.CNT”, BMWI Contract 03X0051C).

The alliance consists of 18 projects. One of them is CarboSpace in which also DLR, INVENT and FutureCarbon are involved, with Astrium being programme coordinator. This activity will last until end of 2011 and has a total budget of 1,5 MEuro (50% of it is funded by the German government). Its target is to develop novel structural space materials using Carbon Nanotube (CNT) doped polymers as matrix for CFRP’s. We call these nanotube doped materials: CNT-CFRP.

Not only the development of CNT-CFRP’s but also the process evaluation as well as fabrication and testing of demonstrators are parts of this project. Selected major candidates for the demonstrators are CFRP: antennae, waveguides, ultra lightweight baffle and heat transfer units.

Currently, the development of the materials and their according processes is running. First characterisation results are available and the materials are going to be further tuned to the specific needs of the respective application. There are promising trends which will be analysed in more detail.

This activity is funded by PTJ based on a resolution of the German Federal Parliament (German Bundestag) using resources of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, support code 03X0051C.

Gefördert vom PTJ mit Mitteln des Bundesministeriums für Wirtschaft und Technologie aufgrund eines Beschlusses des Deutschen Bundestages unter dem Förderkennzeichen 03X0051C.
