FIBER OPTIC SENSING SUBSYSTEM FOR SPACECRAFT HEALTH MONITORING IN TELECOMMUNICATION SATELLITES

Customer: ESA/ESTEC and Kayser-Threde (2006 - 2008)

This activity is to design, manufacture and demonstrate in a mock-up of a typical telecommunications satellite a distributed fiber optic sensing subsystem based on a single interrogation unit and encompassing a large number of sensing elements for measuring temperature, mechanical stress, pressure and other parameters anywhere throughout the spacecraft in a unified and autonomous manner.

This study is lead by the Kayser-Threde GmbH in Munich. HPS, as subcontractor, has the responsibility to handle all items regarding a fibre-optic-equipped CFRP antenna reflector including manufacturing of a reflector breadboard. Further main subcontractors to Kayser-Threde are ASTRIUM (F) and TESAT (D).
